Online Video News Milestone: CNN Adds Live Streaming Video Widget

Have you watched CNN lately? How about online?

This leading global news channel is now positioning itself to be a leader in video ad integration – by putting a 15 second pre-roll advertisement ahead of their stories, they are joining the ranks of websites that offer streaming media for free through sponsorship.

But even more interestingly, they are making their content available for other websites to syndicate. By using their ‘widget’ – essentially a thumbnail that is continually updated to display the latest content on CNN – websites that are interested in featuring content from CNN can embed the program into their webpage. Their readers can click on the widget and open up a video window to view the news, without having to be redirected to the CNN website.

Now this type of content syndication is not exactly new, but for a major broadcaster like CNN to do this, as well offer a platform for video ads is a major event. It only means that it is a mater of time before even more broadcasters begin to make streaming video a regular feature on their own website, as well as allow for advertisers to have their voices heard as well.
